Why Invest on a Wallet to Thwart Pickpockets

First things first, pickpockets are bad, and mean and they don’t seem to get scared even when people try to look tough.

But boarding a jeepney or a public bus or going anywhere public with an eye-catching Louis Vuitton bag or a brand new blackberry is foolish.

Hello.. ang sama na kaya ng mundo ngayon. Tsk tsk. Having realized that, I immediately bought my peppermint spray (read: Pepper Smith) that I hope can help me in desperate times which I equally hope would not happen.

iProtect -- Self Protection Pepper Spray
Here’s why I decided to finally buy Pepper Smith (read on for a looonnngggg account of a nakakapraning jeepney experience):

It was April 9, a holiday, I and my three other brother and sisters decided to watch Clash of the Titans.

At two in the afternoon we left the house and boarded a jeep. I sat in the driver’s side of the jeep with my little sister in my left and my little brother in my right. Our older sister’s opposite us. Before us there were four or five other passengers in the jeep.

In front of our subdivision’s nearby drug store, several men came in. With the rush of these many individuals, my sister took the seat next to my little sister, so now all of us are sitting side by side.

One guy sat beside my little brother. Three sat in front of us: one in glasses (this one sat in front of me), one in jacket (in front of my little brother) and beside him, the third one, sat beside a lady teen passenger wearing ruffled floral blouse and jeans. A fifth guy came in who’s much younger than the others. He’s carrying siomai in one hand and a glass of sago in the other. He was about to sit at the front, but the guy with the glasses said, “Meron pa dito oh.” So the siomai guy entered the jeep and sat at the very end, in front of my older sister. He put the glass of sago which is full up to the brim in the floor and looked at my sisters and said, “Kain!” I worried it will spill any time and my two sisters too since they said they were staring at the sago most of the jeepney ride.

Looking at them, there’s no reason to think they all know each other, they paid their fare separately and didn’t talk to each other at all. But I have a bad feeling that afternoon. And my suspicions were indeed fueled by their next actions:

It started when the guy beside my brother touched the shoulder of the girl in front of him, the girl with the floral blouse. He said a taong grasa touched it and when he opened his hand, there was a sticky, transparent fluid all right. Again, I was annoyed by how easily he reached out his hand for the girl’s shoulder, I felt like she was harassed. And besides, this was like a minute after they came in, the only time a taong grasa could have touched the girl is when they arrived at the jeep and there is no taong grasa in front of our subdivision. I commute every day for work and I’ve seen nada! And besides, looking at the transparent fluid in the guy’s hand, he can’t cup that fluid in his hand from the girl’s blouse, and I hadn’t seen any indication that the blouse was recently wet.

So I was angry for the girl because she looked so innocent as this guy and the guy beside her caress her shoulder and back to remove (daw) whatever the taong grasa supposedly soiled. I was looking intently to see if they’re both trying to steal something from her but the guy in front of my brother, he was staring at me. I was scared that I cut my gaze. The guy beside my brother, the one with the sticky hand, asked the driver for a basahan. He reached out his hand which is in front of me then, and I was staring at it for fear that he might touch my legs or something.

And then, I heard loads of coins fell on the floor. I was confused whom the coins came from, I suspected it was the guy in front of me because he was trying to pick those up. He was coaxing me and my sister to pick the other coins too but we didn’t budge. And he said: “Pulutin nio, walang piso kung walang bente-singko.”

As he said that, I looked at him and smiled. I figured I was very nervous at that time that I smile to hide my increasing anxiety. It was confusing, too many things happening at once: my little sister bent trying to pick coins on the floor, two men touching the teen girl (oh, I really felt sorry for her), cars and other jeepneys were honking in the background and too many thoughts running in my head.

I was thinking of what might happen next, that they will shout “holdup!" and I will be forced to surrender my purse with my cellphone in hand. I remembered I just bought my cellphone last December and --- I just wanted to stop the crazy thoughts.

I shouted “Para” to the driver, who looked at me so intently it was freaking. And alas, we all left the scary jeepney.

The day went on and we watched Clash of the Titans where I secretly wished I have Medusa in hand when I board that scary jeep, and the bad guys would all just turn into stones.

But of course, I will never get hold of Medusa so I did the next best thing I can think of, buy a pepper mint spray.

With security as my current goal, I would like my Pepper Smith to have a partner for promoting everyday safety and that is:

The Slingsafe 200 Anti-Theft Sling Purse from Pacsafe

It has 4 anti-theft features, a slashguard in front panel and a slashproof adjustable shoulder strap which is great for my commute to work.

So join me in promoting security products for safer and more relaxed everyday trips.

This is my entry to the out of town blog contest.

The Winner Takes It All

The truth is I don’t know how it all began.

Maybe it started with my first gold medal in Math back in my third grade. Or watching a dear friend read her graduation speech one Thursday afternoon. Or the fact that I don’t know how to swim, play a guitar or deliver an impromptu speech very well.

Thinking about it now, how it all started seems trivial. I believe one’s main attitude towards life can’t be defined by one single moment (unless it’s one very life-changing/traumatic moment), it’s a series. Of a moment after moment after moment that shapes winners to be whom they are.

I got my first achievement in third grade for a Math quiz bee. Before that, I’m not anybody so it was a surprise for many that I actually won. And even after that, I wasn’t “somebody” too, didn’t got me instant popularity as cheerleaders and athletes. Nerds weren’t the best people to cheer you know.

So by the time I learned that being good in academics won’t make me lots of friends as being fair-skinned can, I was at a loss because by then I don’t know of any talents I have than getting good grades. But it was alright, I have a small intimate circle of friends and a bunch of little clinking medals after.

Getting older, I focused and did what I do best and most of the time in high school, I was rewarded with that. When I got in UP for college, I knew I will have a hard time to be a winner among a sea of winners so I kinda gave that up and enjoyed the college/UP freedom and you know what I found out.

I’ve learned that being a winner does not limit me in academic aspects, I had lots of friends and I’m not fair-skinned, a cheerleader or an athlete. I became a leader of an academic organization and the editor-in-chief of a newsletter. Graduating college with flying colors made me happy, but doing more than just achieving excellence in academics fulfilled me. I realized I am capable of more choices than when I graduated high school.

So now, a year into the real world and I’m still a winner. Recently, I was able to pass the first actuarial exam in one take

Got my name printed in COSMO magazine, it was short but cute and yes, it made me happy

And now has one of Cory Aquino’s copy of a Hello Kitty painting when I submitted an essay for a Mother’s Day tribute. (I’m seriously thinking of writing as a serious to-wile-away-the-time hobby!)

The truth is, at first I thought winners are too self-absorbed individuals who likes to get ahead of everybody and boast about it after. But losers are a more appropriate term for those people. Winners are much more different, even if you started it because you wanted to be noticed. Because who wouldn’t want to be notice eh? Winners – they’re those who overuse their God-given gifts to the brim. And then use it again to inspire others to do the same.

I would love to think about my achievements that way, no matter how personal they are sometimes, that they can be used to inspire others. With this thought, it’s a win-win situation for everyone but mostly for the winner himself.

In the end, maybe the song got it right. The winner takes it all. :)

PS. I know you're also a winner so go tell Jayson your winning story here and get to inspire!

I feel I am Ganda Ever So Much!!!

No, this is not me na nagfefeeling maganda, although I can't deny that. Hehe This is about the latest blog I've found, gandaeversomuch.com.

Ganda Ever So Much!

Here's how I found out about this very cute and unique blog: you see lately I am very lazy to do things I needed to do, study for my next SOA exam or finish Prozac Nation to name a few. Instead, I busy myself with Plants vs Zombies and browsing the internet, which is exactly how I stumbled through the online gem, gandaeversomuch.

If you ask me what I first thought about this blog, well here goes, although Mr. orman might not be too happy with my first impression of his blog. Do you see that big scaly frog on top? Well of course you do. If you follow the site that is the first thing you’re going to see; and for blogs, the first thing that caught the readers’ eye matters a lot.

So what did I think upon seeing this little (or big) creature hanging on the blog’s main bar is perhaps what you dear readers thought too: how can an icky-with-pouty-red-lips frog, much uglier than the Disney inspired Prince Naveen of Princess and The Frog say I am so gandaever! I mean, really my little lovepug in the right can say the exact same line and I might manage to raise just a few eyebrows, but a frog??!!!? Hehe

Enough of that, with this frog as a mascot, I had a notion that this is one unique blog. And Mr. orman didn’t fail me at that.

The first blogpost I read from gandaever really did made me smile. It is the Kailangang Ma-In Love uli Ako.

Not that I am loveless at the moment, but reading this I remember many times in my life that I felt the same. Where is that handsome prince who is going to take my breath away? Or the beat-up jock cleverly dancing my two left feet in the right rhythm? Or the carinoso who would serenade me in front of our patio, as if may patio kami?

Of course, hindi ako tumitingin sa mga fairy tale criteria but seriously, nasan ang love kung kailan pwedeng-pwede ka na. So I read orman’s blogpost and laughed and reminisce and felt nostalgic.

With his recent blogpost and my medyo-malabong-lovelife past, we were related. That’s when I started to scan through the rest of his blog where I found out that some of the entries are something I can totally relate to.

Like when I had feisty fights with my two “bestfriends” where we ended on being full-pledged enemies in his Para Ito Sa Mga Trinaydor Ng Kaibigan.

And on thinking days and nights if my super-gwapo crush then would like me back, I wish I have read this that time.

Plus a post for Vice Ganda, my favorite stand-up comedian.

These are just some of the reasons I keep coming back to this site for more.

I know gandaeversomuch have a lot more stories to share and I would love to be a part of it as a loyal dear reader.

PS. Oh I do not have problems with frogs. I just think they are slimy and greasy and if I touch them, I think I’ll be infected with warts. But really I don’t have problems with frogs.

PPS. And I understand the thing of loving specific creatures/animals to the point of making them your blog mascot. My lovepug, for one received so many raised eyebrows from my friends because they just don’t understand the irresistible cuteness I feel when looking at my lovepug. But so they say, love is love. =)

Treat yourself to a tale filled with breakups, hookups, and more from the author of the Every Girl's Guide series.

In Table for Two, a corner table at a quiet coffee shop takes center stage, the latest release from Summit Books author Marla Miniano. The table is the setting for pivotal moments in the lives of the main characters—who, as it seems, are quite the lovelorn bunch. First, there’s the long-time couple on the verge of calling it quits after college graduation. Then there’s the serial dater who accepts her younger brother’s challenge to go dateless for two months. There’s also a photographer who attempts to dissuade his best friend from getting married (and we’re curious to find out why). And finally, there are the two hopefuls: a young man who meets with the girl he never stopped loving, and a young lady who pores over romance novels, waiting for her turn to fall in love.

Repost from FN: Sisters Anna Meloto-Wilk and Camille Meloto: Practicing Social Enterprise with Human Nature

Anna Meloto-Wilk and Camille Meloto aren’t your average sisters—and it isn’t just because their father is Gawad Kalinga creator Tony Meloto. Beyond their famously philanthropic bloodline, Anna, 30, and Camille, 23, are making a name for themselves in both local and international trade with their all-natural personal care brand, Human Nature. The brand’s claim to fame? It’s 100 percent organic, 100 percent chemical-free, and 100 percent Philippine-grown—not to mention incredibly affordable.

In an age when going organic has developed into a sustainable lifestyle, rather than an idealistic trend, Anna and Camille’s vision to make the country as eco-friendly and socially-responsible as possible is fast taking shape. As Human Nature expands its reach from the Philippine shores to several states in the US—and hopefully, to other great nations in the Orient—what was once a casual idea has now turned into a thriving social enterprise, more concerned with pro-human practices than it is with profit.

I'm not a makeup girl + an Elianto Eyeshadow Palette from Kikay Corner

My most glamorous makeup-is-my-bestfriend moment.

This was taken in my graduation pictorial in college. I know I did look my very best that day, about to finish college and stuff, posing for the yearbook, and with all those makeup the gay beautician put on me, it’s a wonder not to look best.

Well this is me in real life. Funny me to even post my unlikely picture here: no makeup, greasy face, whatever. This was taken on an early morning, what with my still ruffled hair huh.

You see, I was never the makeup girl. Even now, I don’t think I put on makeup the right way when I come in the office. But still, no matter how wrong I feel my makeup is, I still try to put color in my most-of-the-time bland pretty face. Haha!

Oh, I tried here.

When I attended the 3rd Phil. Graphic Fiction Awards with my sister being the finalist.

And here.

At the Christmas Party with my first company.

And at the latest here.

At the First, Fun, Fearless COSMO Eyeball.

So what do you think, did I got my makeup right?

The day after the last event, I heard about this contest Kikay Corner is having: an Elianto Eyeshadow Palette! This comes with a pressed powder, 6 eyeshadows and an eyeshadow brush. Hurray~

Just merely looking at it, I feel this could really help me in my dilemma. I haven't tried wearing eyeshadows, except for rare occasions, because I tend to overdo it. But these eyeshadow palette has mostly light colors, just perfect t give color without going overboard. Plus, the cover with its pink graphic design is just too inviting!

Thus, a full face make-up kit minus the blush-on and lipstick. I don’t wear mascara or eyeliner by the way. I figure if I can have this, I could be greatly motivated to learn (and learn well at that) the basics of proper make-up use. And I never had an expensive makeup item, it’s either I can’t afford it or I think it’s just not worth the extra extra bucks.

Do you remember in your elementary years where your mom buys you that really really good Cattleya notebook equipped with an embroidered pen for your English subject (or any of your hated subject for that matter)? You really hated English but because of your new incredible things you could at least try right?

This might do the trick for me as a Cattleya notebook would back then. Maybe this is my chance to re-learn English (in this case, using makeup) what with my brand new Cattleya notebook (and in my case, an Elianto Eyeshadow Palette like this if only Elinato and Kikay Corner forbid I win)! Yehey to that. XD

For the contest mechanics, (I recommend you join too so everyone knows the good news!) click HERE.

PS. In my time, a Cattleya notebook costs a lot. :D

Your Heart Takes Love Seriously

You are attracted to those who are unbridled, untrammeled, and free.

In love, you feel the most alive when your lover is creative and never lets you feel bored.

You'd like your lover to think you are loyal and faithful... that you'll never change.

You would be forced to break up with someone who is ruthless, cold-blooded, and sarcastic.

Your ideal relationship is lasting. You want a relationship that looks to the future... one you can grow with.

Your risk of cheating is zero. You care about society and morality. You would never break a commitment.

You think of marriage pessimistically. You don't think happy marriages exist anymore.

In this moment, you think of love as a commitment. Love only works when both people are totally devoted.

This is the result when I took this quiz.

I like the first line.

Experience Boracay like the FIRST TIME

Boracay is an island in the Philippines located in its Western Visayas region. It was voted as one of the best beaches in the world by the BMW Tropical Beach Handbook and in 1996, it is proclaimed as the world’s number one tropical beach by TV Quick. Surely, it is one of our country’s major prides.

I know this and yet I’ve never been to Boracay.

I’m not in that part of my life where I get to spend much on travelling, so at this stage, thinking of my first encounter with the famous Boracay is the best I can do (plus save for next summer!).

In my first time in Boracay, I will:

Feel the world-renowned Boracay sand, and maybe bottle a handful of it as a souvenir.

Have a relaxing time under the shade of a tree. With a mesmerizing beauty like this, I could not help staring.

Be taken aback by the nature’s beauty: the white sand, the little waves punching eagerly on shore, wind hustling crazily on coconut trees…

And gasp at the first sight of the hotel where I’ll be staying, the Mediterranean-inspired lounge is oh-so inviting for a quiet and relaxing vacation.

Have a glimpse of Boracay from my room-tall window in my requested double room.

And linger in its upview, with the man-made swimming pool below as tempting as the beach itself.

Vow to score all the outdoorsy activities like the Banana Boat, Jetski, Zipline, Zorb and others that I’m too excited and a little nervous to try. Nevertheless, I will not let the opportunity pass me by.

Fall in love with the transient swirling of the sky colors nearing dawn. See how it emphasizes the homely atmosphere of the resort hotel.

Dine with my best friends in this too-comfortable setting beside the pool.

And enjoy a cold sip of my favorite martini.

After dinner, the cold breeze of the night intensifies our longing for a comfort like home.

And home won’t be that far with the queen-sized beds US Chiropractic Association approved in our double room, equipped with a cable television and AC for a good morning after.

Engage in an amicable conversation with my friends over our complimentary almusal. If I could wake up like this EVERY day…

I know I would be happy, but I know I can’t. I just hope I get to see Boracay the way I intend to even for as short as 3 days and 2 nights. Ain’t those days just the kind of days we will always long for?

And I know all these will be possible if I stay at Microtel Inns & Suites for they’ve been the BEST hotel in Boracay to beat not once, not twice but EIGHT years in a row. You see, eight years, that’s not negotiable. It’s the most grandiose it can ever get.

Indeed, in Microtel Inns & Suites Hotel, you can experience Boracay as if the first time.
